4 Ways to Stage Your House for a Winter Sale

Selling a house in winter? You’ll want to make sure potential buyers fall in love with it. For that reason, we’re sharing 4 ways to stage your house for a winter sale…

Winter is a favorite time of year for many people. However, if you’re planning to sell your house, winter might seem like the worst time to sell. Fortunately, it can be a very good time to sell, especially if you use these 4 ways to stage your house for a winter sale

4 Ways To Stage Your House For A Winter Sale

#1. The weather outside might be frightful…

… but the inside of your home can be so delightful! In fact, people often associate winter with warm, welcoming homes. This is exactly what many buyers are looking for – a welcoming place they can call home. So when you stage your home in winter, make it feel like they’re there just in time for winter treats and eggnog around the fire.

So what do we suggest here?

  • Have a chair by the fireplace or around a bright window with a lamp, a snuggly blanket, a book and a cup of coffee or cocoa.
  • In the master bedroom, make the bed up with warm fluffy blankets, pillows and a big throw.
  • Have a whirlpool tub, stage it ready for a warm winter bath, think candles, wine glasses, and thick fluffy blankets.
  • Don’t forget the TV room, stage it for the big game day party.

#2. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…

Not every home has a fireplace but if yours does, you may want to highlight it as an ideal place to provide a warm and comforting glow. Buyers will love how warm and inviting your home is with glowing embers still smoldering in the fireplace while they look through the house.  Now you are not probably going to have your fireplace lit up every day for a potential showing, but you can get it up and running for photo day and open houses.  And if you have a fireplace on a switch, leave a note by the switch to flip it and see what happens so they can see how easy it is to start a fire.

If you no longer use your fireplace, as many people do not, still stage it with candles.

#3. Gifts all wrapped under the tree… err . . . scratch that!

Ok, we just missed Christmas, so save this idea for next year.  If you want to sell your house, you want buyers to see themselves living in the house as THEIR home, and nothing is more seasonally inviting than a decorated tree with plenty of presents underneath. Wrap up some empty boxes and place them under the tree to give a warm and inviting impression of an abundant, happy Christmas.

However, since Christmas is over, do leave out your snowmen wreaths, and garlands.  You want to keep the “Winter” decorations out through about Valentine’s Day.  But put away the Christmassy stuff.  No more candy canes, Santa Clauses, and Nativity Sets.   And don’t forget your outside areas.  Garland and Pine Cones or other woodland items to stage the picnic table on the deck.  And if you have outside entertaining space, make sure to have a few photos of it all staged for summer, near the window or door for them to see as they look out into the backyard.

#4. Walking in a winter wonderland…

It seems that we may see a LOT of snow this winter.  So while it looks nice, you don’t want your potential buyers to actually have to walk in the fluffy stuff or contemplate how hard it might be to shovel all that stuff.  Take the time to clear the snow with nice neat paths, or pay someone with a snow blower to do it for you.  And be sure to put ice melt out so they don’t slip.

Just inside your entry door, make sure there is an inviting rug so your guests can sit down to take off shoes or put on booties to protect your floors.  Don’t make them hop around on one foot while they work on their footwear.
